CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Jack’s phone rang over the SUV’s speakers as he drove himself and Kelly back to the Fayetteville field office. “Jack Harper,” he answered.

“It’s Nadia. Ah, Jack, there’s a place called Bull’s-eye Ammo & Sports in Fayetteville that sells Master Shot arrows.”

“Directions?” He glanced over at Kelly, who was in the middle of wiping her face with a tissue, using the mirror on the back of the visor. She flipped it up.

“One second… Bull’s-eye? That was a name on the Durans’ bank statement.” She scrambled for her phone.

“We’ll go pay them a visit now,” Jack said to Nadia. “What about other retailers near the previous murders?”

“Yep, I have some names for you, which I’ll email.”

Jack wasn’t sure if he was breathing easier or heavier, but it was always one freaking clue in a case—the one piece that had everything clicking together. Could they be onto something now that would take them to the Leopard?

“Turn here, Jack,” Kelly burst out.

“Right here?” He pointed to the street they were quickly approaching.

“Yeah.”

Jack yanked the wheel, and the SUV swerved, causing Kelly to reach for the oh-shit bar.

“You guys still in one piece?” Nadia asked, humor lighting her voice, and Jack realized she didn’t know about Agent Shaw.

Jack looked over at Kelly again. She was pale and still had a good hold on the bar. “So far,” he answered.

Kelly’s mouth gaped open in panic… No, she was panting from nerves.

“There is something you should know.” Jack went on to tell Nadia about the explosion and Shaw.

“Oh my god,” Nadia gasped out. “I sure hope she’ll be all right.”

“That makes all of us.”

“I bet. Be careful.”

Jack thanked her and ended the call. Being careful was always the plan. He glanced over at Kelly, who had lowered her arm and was pointing, indicating for Jack to take the next left. He switched lanes and continued talking.

“It’s possible that Mark and our unsub ran into each other at this store. You don’t happen to remember when Duran made the charge here?”

“Not off the top, no,” Kelly said. “Bull’s-eye is right there.”

In front of them on the right was a large road-front sign announcing the place. At least Jack had lots of advance notice this time. He signaled, turned in, and parked. Then his phone rang.

The caller identified himself as one of the crime scene investigators working out at the cabin. “We found pieces of what we believe was a cell phone. It was likely used as a denotator.”

“So the explosion was remotely triggered?” Jack asked, daring to feel a little hope that he hadn’t caused it by a misplacement of his foot.

“It looks that way. We also recovered fragments of a motion-triggered camera.”

“So he was watching us… No trigger plate?” He just wanted to hear it for certain.

“Not that we can determine. More likely he was watching and chose to denotate when he wanted to.”

That news only ended up delivering a trace of relief. He was still the reason his team and Shaw had been at the cabin in the first place.
